A Jeep Day Trip Through the Texas Hill Country: Luckenbach, Bankersmith & Backroad Adventures
Sometimes the best Hill Country days are the ones without much of a plan.
My husband and I recently hopped in the Jeep and headed out from Blanco for a day of exploring. No packed itinerary, no rushing from one place to the next—just scenic Texas backroads, a couple of fun stops, good food, live music, and plenty of time to enjoy the drive.
And honestly, those are some of my favorite days.
Taking the Backroads from Blanco
One of the things I love most about living in Blanco is how quickly you can find yourself on a beautiful country road.
Instead of taking the fastest route, we chose the scenic one. We wound our way through the Texas Hill Country, passing ranches, old stone fences, huge oak trees, rolling hills, and those little stretches of road that make you want to slow down just to take everything in.
That's part of the fun of a Jeep day, after all. The drive isn't just how you get there—it's part of the adventure.
A Stop in Luckenbach, Texas
Our first destination was the tiny but famous town of Luckenbach.
If you've never been, Luckenbach is one of those places that's hard to explain until you've experienced it. It's laid-back, a little quirky, unmistakably Texas, and seems to run on its own schedule.
We happened upon a little market while we were there and, of course, couldn't leave empty-handed.
Our finds for the day were pickled garlic and smoked steak seasoning—which felt like pretty appropriate souvenirs for a Texas road trip.
We spent some time wandering around, listening to live music and just enjoying the atmosphere. There's something pretty special about sitting under the trees, listening to musicians play and watching people from all over gather in this tiny Texas town.
No big agenda needed.
Next Stop: Bankersmith
After Luckenbach, we climbed back into the Jeep and continued down the road toward Bankersmith.
Bankersmith is another one of those Hill Country places where you really aren't sure what you're going to find until you get there—and that's half the fun.
We stopped for lunch, explored a little, and I got to feed the goats and alpacas!
I'm not sure how old you're supposed to be before feeding goats and alpacas stops being exciting, but apparently I haven't reached that age yet.
They were adorable, entertaining, and absolutely knew when someone had food.
Between the animals, the rustic surroundings and lunch, Bankersmith was the perfect second stop before we started making our way back toward Blanco.
The Best Part Was the Drive
Luckenbach and Bankersmith were both great, but one of my favorite parts of the entire day was simply exploring the backroads with my husband.
It's easy to get focused on destinations when you're traveling, but the Texas Hill Country is one of those places where it's worth leaving a little extra room in your schedule.
Turn down the pretty road.
Stop at the little roadside market.
Listen to the live music.
Buy the weird jar of pickled garlic.
Feed the alpaca.
Take the picture.
That's usually where the best memories come from.
Make Blanco Your Hill Country Home Base
This is one of the reasons I love sharing Blanco with our guests at Blanco Riverside Getaway.
You can wake up along the Blanco River, enjoy a slow morning, and then head out for an entire day of exploring the Hill Country. Luckenbach, Fredericksburg, wineries, distilleries, small towns, scenic drives, swimming holes, local restaurants and plenty of unexpected roadside stops are all within reach.
Then, after your adventure, you can head back to Blanco, kick off your shoes and relax.
That's my kind of vacation.
A Few Tips for Your Own Hill Country Road Trip
If you're planning your own day of exploring, don't over-plan it. Pick one or two places you'd really like to visit and leave some time for whatever catches your eye along the way.
Take the backroads when you can, keep a cooler in the car for local food finds, and don't be afraid to stop at the little markets and locally owned businesses you discover.
And if you hear live music somewhere?
Stop.
You are in the Texas Hill Country, after all.
Come Explore From Blanco
There are so many things to do near Blanco, Texas, but sometimes the best way to experience the Hill Country is simply to get in the car—or Jeep—and see where the road takes you.
Our little adventure through Luckenbach and Bankersmith reminded me that you don't have to travel far to feel like you've gotten away.
If you're ready for your own Texas Hill Country weekend getaway, come stay with us at Blanco Riverside Getaway. Make Blanco your home base, explore during the day, and come back to the river when you're ready to slow down.
And if you happen to find some really good pickled garlic along the way, I'd say you've had a pretty successful road trip.
